GSB’s Justin Vermaak pinpointed Anthony Destombes as the first candidate for Owner Profiles. A former professional footballer, Anthony met Justin in Brazil during the 2014 World Cup where they discovered their joint love for soccer and racing.

Anthony tells: “My family has been involved in horseracing for years. My uncle Mike Destombes has raced some top horses including Bold Ellinore, Emperor Napoleon and Legally Blonde so I’ve always followed the game.

“When Justin and I got talking he told me about Green Street Bloodstock and his plans for getting new owners involved in ownership so I joined the syndicate and our first runner, Miss Nightingale was a winner. I’ve been more hooked than ever since then. I have shares in five runners now, the latest being GSB’s recent yearling buys Trap Lord and Blow In The Box. There will be more. I can’t stay away.”

He carries the nickname, “The Prof” and says: “I was invited to attend a braai at the Moutonshoek Stable Office during one of last year’s TBA Sales and when I was introduced as a new owner Chris Gerber of Moutonshoek joked and said, “Oh, so we have a new Professor of Racing in our ranks!” Bernard Fayd’Herbe has made sure that “The Prof” has stuck with me ever since.’’

Best moment in racing: Our first GSB runner, my own first runner, Miss Nightingale was a winner first time out and it was quite amazing. A few days before the race I felt so confident I bought more shares in her. The plan came together, she won at 10-1 and she’s won R141,000 in stakes so far, not bad for a R50,000 buy!
