PIETER Brown had an awful setback when he was involved in a motorcycle accident in 2010 – effectively, this put an end to his amateur career as a show jumper and polocross player.
He loves horses, period, and there was an upside some time later when his stepson, Denis Schwartz, enrolled at the SA Jockeys Academy as an apprentice and fuelled his interest in horseracing.
“Denis encouraged me to get involved as an owner so I could still be around horses so I started searching on the internet and found Green Street Bloodstock.
“I must say, from the start I enjoyed good service from Justin Vermaak and his team. Justin offered me four first up – Promising Prospect, Last Outlaw, Castor Cat and Midnight Jet. I took shares in all but Castor Cat.
“Midnight Jet died of colic soon after, but the horse was insured and again, here, promises were kept. The death was covered by insurance and Midnight Jet was paid for and the matter settled quickly.
“Having to wait a while for the young horses can make a new owner impatient, Justin suggested a share in a horse, Sovereign Reign, who was already racing. That was a good thing because I was able to share in the excitement sooner, It is something I’d recommend to new owners. Try find one to race early, while you wait for the babies to come through.”
Since Last Outlaw and co, Pieter recently invested in top sales purchases The KO Kid and Coral Queen, both youngsters looking promising in training.
He’s a businessman by trade and runs the successful House Of Pawn brokerage near Carnival City in Brakpan on the East Rand, as well as the Green Fig Guesthouse.
