ANOTHER National Yearling Sale has come and gone. This year’s sale was the most successful for our business so far as we managed to secure six lovely horses. Two were for clients and will not go into the Green Street Team, the other four will. You can read about them in the article on our website here.
It was good to catch up with the Australian boys, Barry Bowditch from Magic Millions was back again with “Chuck” Norris, a highly successful businessman in his own right who acts as a bid spotter for the TBA over the days of sale, he is world class at his “job”.
Champions Day was another top class racing affair. I did Under Starters Orders and remarked that it was “Champions Day” and not “Spooks Day” after my fellow guest Darryl Maree was trying to beat a few favourites (and rightfully so) – that’s when the exotics pay. I also play to get them beat on most days, but on Saturday I didn’t believe upsets were on the cards without something out of the ordinary happening. They don’t tend to happen to “Champions”.
I tipped a R64 Pick 6 perm which arrived paying R350 odd, not a huge return, but the Carry On Alice and Legal Eagle double wasn’t a bad price considering both couldn’t miss. Legal Eagle stamped himself as the best horse in the country and surely Equus Horse Of The Year to go with the Equus Miler and Middle Distance awards he is sure to land. He deserves everything that’s coming to him. As for the filly, she is a real superstar.
It was back to KZN after the big race day, a big week here for us. Silver Mountain makes her return to the track in the Fillies Guineas and the draws have played into her hands. Bela Bela looks the biggest danger on her Paddock Stakes run behind Smart Call and Inara, finishing in front of Same Jurisdiction.
Silver Mountain hasn’t even come close to beating the likes of those and is going to have to improve on two head defeats of Victorious Jay to beat Bela Bela. Silver Mountain’s facile SA Fillies Guineas win is put into context when you see where the second and third horses have run and finished in their starts since, not inspiring. In saying that, Silver Mountain has the draw and probably distance advantage over the field and hopefully she can win. She is still maturing and is not the finished product yet.
We host our first Green Street Open Day at Summerveld on Saturday, it’s a lovely time for all our current owners to get together and visit their horses and see them in our parade. This will be followed by a showing of the new purchases for our interested buyers, it’s always good to get a look in at your potential buys in the flesh as certain horses tend to appeal to people in different ways. We have a fair crowd booked in and anybody interested should email us at email@example.com and come enjoy the experience and a day out.
Later that day my good friend of over a decade Chesney Van Zyl is tying the knot to fiancée Candice, one hell of a party I’m sure!
