LESLIE Logan chuckles when referred to as “The Mayor of Durban” – he has the suave looks of a man who has gone places, and he has.
Leslie is the owner and CEO of the SiyaKwamukela Group of companies, with engineering and scaffolding just two of a number of services on their profile; and he’s also a Green Street Bloodstock shareholder in 13 horses.
Leslie has built up his 12-year-old business to a major success and he’s looking for a special top horse to bring Gr1 glory in the racing arena now. “I get involved too easily, every time there is an offer I get itchy to take a share. Racing is such a special and exciting industry.”
He had virtually no interest in racing apart from noticing that the Durban July was a major event every year. Aside from that, Leslie never looked at a horse until a friend, who owns a Tattersalls, introduced him to trainer Gavin van Zyl and persuaded him to take a partnership share with him.
“That was less than two years ago, and I have owned or had shares in 30 horses since, I need to cut down but I probably won’t. I like the game too much” laments Leslie.
His best runner so far has been the Just As Well filly Princess Analia (Van Zyl), who finished second on debut and then beat Gr1-placed Sail over 1200m in her second start. She’s won 2 of 10 altogether so far, and is not done yet. “I have a special place in my heart for her,” he says.
Leslie has a share in Last Outlaw, one of GSB’s best prospects, and several promising recent yearling purchases.
