GREEN Street Bloodstock has purchased promising two-year-old Sea King, trained by Glen Kotzen, for an undisclosed amount.
Sea King, twice a winner from four starts, will race for his new owners, a GSB Syndicate, in Sunday’s Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes over 1600m at Greyville.
Justin Vermaak commented: “We’ve bought Sea King with a view to the 2018 Triple Crown in Gauteng. He’s a half-brother to Paddy O’Reilly, who was stakes-placed and stayed all day. I am very happy with the purchase, I think it will be difficult for him to be in the firing line in the Gr1 this weekend but I think on his pedigree and with his scope he is a perfect horse to send to Johannesburg to run in the rich 3yo races next season which is our target. We also have started an operation in Mauritius and we have earmarked him as one of our future flag bearers.
“South African buyers for some reason will spend millions on yearlings who have never been raced before hoping to get feature race performers, but they won’t spend fractions of that to buy horses in training who are already at that level which results in a much smaller gamble. This makes very little sense to me but I’m very happy to have a go and see what levels we can reach with this colt. He has drawn well this weekend and who knows, maybe he squeaks a place.”
