MEET jovial Fabian Oostendorp, a Green Street Bloodstock patron with shares in eight horses.
“When I was growing up I always had a personal ambition of owning a racehorse and it took me a long time to fulfil my dream. But with my business interests growing and doing well I was finally able to buy a share earlier this year. Blow In The Box was my first buy, unraced with Joey Ramsden, and I have acquired seven more shares since,” Fabian tells.
Fabian is self-employed in Cape Town, specialising in high-powered cable maintenance, and, at 46, he’s working on another ambition – to finish his National Higher Electrician’s Diploma.
Fabian’s father, Malcolm, was involved in the Cape racing industry for many years. He transported horses for many of the old-school trainers like Ralph Rixon, Guy Rixon, Bobby Shutt and Alan Higgins, and later became a supervisor at the famous old Blue Chip Carriers.
“I went racing with my dad, the moment I was old enough to get in. I met some of the personalities with him, like the late, great jockey ‘Rooies’ Fourie, who was riding for the Rixons at the time. I also spent time on the floats travelling to and from racing and even started riding work for Mr Shutt, Mr Higgins and Mohammed Alli Racing.
“I’m too heavy to do that today,” he jokes, “but I still love being around racehorses and the stables and I love going racing and looking at pedigrees. My dad told me about Justin and Bernard’s venture with GSB and encouraged me to take the step and buy a share, so I bought a share in Blow In The Box on his 70th birthday.
“I also have shares now in among others Trap Lord, who will race in Port Elizabeth, Coral Queen and Hoppertunity in KZN with Gavin Van Zyl and Oratio, who made a good debut last Saturday for Justin Snaith and should win a race soon, I am looking forward to my first winner!
