Justin Vermaak (Director, Green Street Bloodstock) and Bernard Fayd’Herbe (Retained Jockey, Brand Ambassador)

Justin has been an ambitious, motivated member of the racing industry for the past 10 years. He quickly grew through the ranks starting as an assistant trainer, becoming a handicapper and then the Maine Chance Farms racing manager in no less than 6 years.

Starting out with an apprenticeship to John Fox as a 14 year old, he took his first paid job as an assistant trainer to Dylan Cunha at 18, which culminated in the winning of the Gr1 Summer Cup with Strategic News, Justin also enjoyed his first successful stint as a jockey’s agent to Glyn Schofield.

Two months after the Summer Cup, Justin became a full time agent at 19, representing the likes of Anthony Delpech,Felix Coetzee,Bernard Fayd’herbe and Sean Cormack. After three successful years, Justin took the job of handicapper for the NHRA in Johannesburg, at 22, the youngest handicapper in the world by over a decade.

A fulfilling year followed until Justin decided that a desk job was not for him and chose to branch out on his own again, with his enhanced handicapping experience as a major advantage. He then took on the role as an agent to S’manga Khumalo, who’s career he transformed into the multiple Gr1 winning, Vodacom Durban July winning, leading jockey that he is today, all in the short time span of 18 months. It was during this time that Dr Andreas Jacobs and Maine Chance employed Justin to manage all their racing affairs, a job he still performs with great pride today.

Justin was recently appointed as a director of the Western Cape Racing Association for 2016.

“Knowledge, Passion, Experience…”

Bernard, 33, was born in Durban, but grew up in Madagascar. Being the grandson of the legendary Tiger Wright, it was only natural that he apply to the South African Jockey Academy to which he was accepted in 1996. During his apprenticeship he rode for the late Michael Roberts. He was awarded his professional jockey licence in 2000. His racing career started out with a bang with a win on Dollar Deal.

Bernard is now an accomplished senior rider in South Africa with multiple group 1 victories as he rose to fame during his partnership with the legendary Pocket Power. Fayd’Herbe has had a stellar career to date on the South African and international tracks and in the last six years alone has ridden his mounts to a 40 per cent place ratio in more than 3 000 starts.

Fayd’Herbe is an adaptable jockey and this is what he brings to his new role in the syndication and horse management partner, Green Street Bloodstock. In this role Fayd’Herbe and his partners will seek out promising talent at yearling sales focusing their efforts more on “talent scouting” rather than pedigree and a host of other aspects that see horses fetch high prices.

Bernard is a freelance jockey, however he currently has primary options to ride for South Africa’s elite trainers including Mike De Kock, Mike Bass, Joey Ramsden, Geoff Woodruff and Justin Snaith. To date his career has earned him five Queen’s Plate wins, three J&B Met wins and a Durban July victory as well as a World Cup night win on the international stage of Dubai.
